Well Plugging and Abandonment: Challenges, Best Practices, and Future Opportunities

The Thursday, October 9, 2025, meeting will feature David Perrin, Well Lifecycle Management Engineer for Chevron. David will discuss engineering aspects of plugging and abandoning wells. It will be held on the Northshore at Expert E&P’s Madisonville office on 101 Ashland Way at 11am networking & lunch; 11:30am Presentation. Viewing by TEAMS will be available. The cost is free with light lunch served.

Abstract: Someone once told me that "P&A" stands for "Probably Anything" and for anyone that's ever been involved in plugging and abandoning wells knows how true that is. All wells will need to be properly decommissioned once they reach the end of their useful life to ensure they remain permanently sealed to prevent any release of fluids to the environment for the long-term. However, as wells age, they can develop several integrity issues that present technical challenges during the P&A operation. In addition, historical well records can often be limited, inaccurate or non-existing which further increases uncertainty and risk. This presentation will examine best practices and technologies that can optimize abandonment planning and improve long-term reliability as well as explore future opportunities for this growing sector of the industry.  
 
Bio: David Perrin is a Well Lifecycle Management Engineer for Chevron. He joined Chevron in 2012 as a Drill Site Manager leading the execution of offshore wells operations in the Gulf of America. David has over 13 years of diverse wells engineering and operations experience including both shelf and deepwater drilling, completions, and well intervention activities with primary focus on decommissioning. In his current role, he partners with upstream businesses across the enterprise to provide wells engineering support for plugging and abandonment of legacy assets including evaluation for potential carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites. David participates in several industry organizations including AADE, SPE, IOGP, and PACE. He currently serves on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Technologies and Practices for Plugging and Remediating Orphaned and Abandoned Wells. David received his Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
